zero waste shopping trip #1: Der Greissler and beyond, 1080 Vienna

zero waste shopping - der greissler
If I cannot stand one thing, it is waste. Just as little as I want to waste food, I do not want to waste my time. That’s why I go shopping with a shopping list and decide beforehand where I want to buy what. Package-free shopping requires more planning than just your usual walk into the next supermarket.

I like to go to the package-free shops in Vienna, but I do not live close to any of them. So I decided to take a look around and see what other shops are close by to get more products package-free. This way, I can go shopping in the same area without rushing to various places all over the city. These Zero Waste Shopping Trips not only save unnecessary packaging, but time and stress as well. 🙂

The start of this new series #zerowasteshoppingtrip is a tour around Der Greissler in the 8th district.

Zero Waste Shopping Trip - 1080 Vienna

For your orientation: The distance between Der Greissler and the farmer’s market is about 250 m (walking distance: 3 minutes), and to füllbar it is another 350 m.

Important: use the “drive-through ATM” at the corner of Albertgasse/Josefstädter Straße – you will need cash at Der Greissler and a few of the other shops.

Der Greissler

Albertgasse 19, 1080 Vienna

Der Greissler is not really around the corner from my apartment. So when I go to Albertgasse 19, I buy as much as I can to have enough groceries for the week or even longer. I fill my own glass jars or bags with fruit, vegetables, cheese, pasta, lentils, muesli, sweets, tea and spices. Dairy products are sold in glass, which I can return thanks to the deposit system. Even soaps and cleaning products are available. However, that is still not everything! You can look up all the products here (only in German).

It is important to me to be able to buy my groceries package-free, organic, seasonal, regional and fairly traded. It is nice to walk into a shop and know beforehand that all these criteria are fulfilled.

If you forget to bring your own glass jars, there will always be some at the shop, as well as egg crates.

zero waste shopping trip - farmers marketFarmer’s Market Lerchenfeld

Altlerchenfeld Church (corner of Lerchenfelder Straße/Schottenfeldgasse, 1070 Vienna)

On Fridays there is a farmer’s market in front of the church Altlerchenfeld at the end of Albertgasse, the Lerchenfelder farmer’s market. At the market are among other stalls Biohof ADAMAH, Die Fischbauern and a farmer with wonderful cheese. I never had any problems with my own bags and dishes. (Although, I never tried it at the fish stall because I bought fish somewhere else so far.)

Lerchenfelderstraße 99-101 & corner Bernardgasse/Schottenfeldgasse, 1070 Vienna

Vis-à-vis of the farmer’s market is the bakery and café Felzl. You can buy bread, rolls and pastry and they will put it in your own bag without a problem. If you arrive there after 20:00, you can walk two crossroads to Bernardgasse and try the bread vending machine. Bread and pastry that wasn’t sold during the opening ours can be purchased here until 06:00 in the morning. Isn’t that a wonderful idea to avoid food waste? I love it!

zero waste shopping trip - winer rösthausWiener Rösthaus

Tigergasse 33, 1080 Vienna

I bought my coffee beans at Wiener Rösthaus even before I knew anything about zero waste. Now, I can bring my coffee home in my own tin. The nice staff will answer all your questions about the different varieties, roasting or preparation and storage at home. Worth a visit, supreme coffee delight!

For your information: If you are in a hurry you can buy Wiener Rösthaus’s coffee beans at Der Greissler.

zero waste shopping trip - AlmenlandAlmenland Genussladen

Josefstädter Straße 60, 1080 Vienna

On the other side of the Josefstädter Straße, at the end of the Tigergasse, is the Almenland Genussladen. They sell cheese and “Kaspressknödel” without packaging. Various delicacies, such as chutneys and marmalades, are available in glass.

For your information: Next to the shop is a bakery, Gradwohl.

Attention! The shop is only open until 16:00.

zero waste shopping trip - dennsSupermarkets: denn’s & Spar

Josefstädter Straße 18 & 64, 1080 Wien

On the Josefstädter Straße are two supermarkets, denn’s (n°18) and Spar (n°64) if you are looking for something specific. You will not get as much without packaging, but at least there sell most things in glass or paper. If you are looking for Aleppo soap or organic cleaning products, you will find it.

Cleaning products & household items

zero waste shopping trip - füllbarfüllbar

Lerchenfelder Straße 55, 1070 Vienna

The tiny shop füllbar sells cleaning products and detergents from the brand Uni Sapon. As I’m currently trying different homemade products I haven’t bought anything there yet, but I still wanted to get informed. A zero waste obstacle: all products have to be purchased in their original packaging for the first time. Then, you can bring the bottle and get it refilled.

Any questions were answered very nicely and detailed. Just go there and check it out yourself, especially if you are looking for eco-friendly products.

For your information: there is a fruit and vegetable vendor right next to the shop.

Josefstädter Straße 50, 1080 Vienna

With the wonderful slogan “quality over quantity”, the Grandia GmbH sells hardware and kitchenware in the Josefstädter Straße. The first time I walked into the store I was looking for creative cookie cutters and was not disappointed. All products are listed online, but best you just ask at the store if you need anything.

Lerchenfelder Straße 45-47, 1070 Vienna

Looking for vintage clothes (50s to 90s)? Well, you are already in the area, why not take a look at the Humana Shop? 😉 The shop is right at the corner to Neubaugasse. However you think about Humana, at least it is second hand.

zero waste shopping trip - vega novaVega Nova

Josefstädter Straße 63, 1080 Vienna

Ecologically and fairly produced shoes are not easily to find. So, when you are already in the 8th district, you might want to take advantage of it and buy new shoes at Vega Nova. You can leave the shoe box at the store, they weill reuse it. I you want to sign up for the loyalty program, you can opt-out of the paper catalogues and receipts.

For your information: right next to the shop is a shoe maker (was anyone there yet?) and a fruit shop.
